New pod with exclusive Marcus Whale, Shoeb Ahmad x Liars, HTRK and many other jazz funk greats
NWAP123 also feat. Jake Blood, MXMARS, DBR, User754492117, Leighton Craig, Mookoid, Subclavia and Digital Penetration
Dear youse,
Staring at the four walls of lockdown does not spark much joy, that much we can all agree on. And when we’re fresh out of conversation with our shut-ins, or with the walls themselves, it can seem like we’re stuck in an ENDLESS blerg-ian LOOP. In those moments, my response is to throw on my headphones, shut my eyes and get the hell out of there. And I flip the switch to that which is unfamiliar; music as a signpost to SOMEWHERE ELSE. Somewhere other than whatever the fuck this is.
Which is a wannabe-poetic way to intro NWAP123, the latest New Weird Australia Podcast episode; and to intro a spicy update to the NWA Spotify playlist - both of which are rife with beautiful, unknowable things.
First up, the POD. Marcus Whale’s new rekkid The Hunger drops this Friday, and there’s an exclusive preview of the album track Raining Blood tucked inside this episode. The Hunger is a gessamstwerk pitch, a perfect summation of all that has gone before, whilst simultaneously mining fresh and tasty veins. It’s glorious.
Across the other fifty-one minutes, the episode also hides treats from Shoeb Ahmad in a remix collaboration with Angus Andrew from Liars (even typing that makes me giddy); Melbourne’s JakeBlood drops dark, MOODY BROODY electronics on his new release, Prix; and we get some surprising (but not unwelcome) low-key acoustic vibes from the new HTRK album Rhinestones.
We also hear from MXMARS, blending experimental pop with POWER AMBIENT; as well as two cuts from the Sydney netabel e-quarium from DBR and User754492117; and outsider electronics from Subclavia. We also take a quiet detour with Leighton Craig; and check out new work from Mookoid and Digital Penetration.
You can OF COURSE listen and subscribe to the New Weird Australia podcast on Apple Podcasts, Spotify or wherever you get your podcasts. Or you can listen to it directly on the NWA web PORTAL to the multiverse.
And if all this podcast chat is feeling like a long journey into somewhere you’re not quite ready for, you can gingerly dip a proverbial into the Styxian depths of the New Weird Australia Spotify playlist.
Today you’ll new adds from Divide & Dissolve, Jobfit, Megan Alice Clune, OVRSCN, Panoptique Electrical, Richard Pike, HTRK, Marcus (AGAIN), MXMARS, Shoeb Ahmad and Happy Axe.
Are you making music and would like to be included in such things? Then send me some music plz.
That’s the end of this missive.
Stay safe.
And so it goes.
