New releases from Sumn Conduit and salllvage out now on New Editions
'Valve Is Released' and 'lastwave' are Editions No.13 and No.14 in the New Editions series; out now on Bandcamp and all streaming platforms
From out of the void we emerge with the news that two new titles have been added to our New Editions series; two immaculate sets from experimental artists Sumn Conduit and salllvage. Both releases are available now on the New Weird Bandcamp and all streaming platforms.
The first of the pair is Valve Is Released from Sumn Conduit, the duo project of Dharawal / Inuk vocalist Sonya Holowell, and modular synthesist and composer Ben Carey. After a planned Sydney performance was washed out last year, the duo retreated to Ben’s studio to record what would become their first studio recording. Exploring a new methodology, they worked from a pre-created text source; a graphic / text score by Sonya which had been previously published in ADSR Zine. The result is Valve Is Released, a longform performance subdivided into six tracks, connecting air and steel, flesh and electricity. We’ve adored Ben & Sonya’s work for a great while, and we’re stoked to have them join the label for this release. Back in Covid times, we interviewed them for our podcast - listen back here for a primer into their practice.

The second release is lastwave from salllvage (Rowan Savage), a proud Kombumerri man, living on Wangal Land. Rowan is also someone we’ve admired for a long time - an experimental producer and DJ working at the intersection of sonic mysticism, queer and club culture, and connection with Country. Eschewing the clubbier leanings of his recent work, lastwave is sonic mysticism in action – from gentle-yet-intense drones to fried, bassy skitterings and heavenly, sinister bells, by way of indistinct voices dredged from the depths of 1970s wyrdness, and the cries of animals and insects. It’s wild and beautiful work.

Sumn Conduit and salllvage will both join Ojibwe musician Joe Rainey at the opening night of Volume, a festival of sound and vision at Art Gallery of New South Wales, on Friday 22 September 2023. Sumn Conduit will perform a live set on the Aqualand Atrium stage, and a new score by salllvage will loop across the night, alongside large-scale projections courtesy of Murri artist Tahlia Palmer and cyber dreamscapes by Serwah Attafuah.
Thanks as always for your support - stay safe and keep the freak flag flying high.
